Course Assignments, Quizzes, Exams, etc.

Readings and writing assignments are vital to success in this class! It is difficult to succeed in this class without doing your homework. Therefore, it is important that you do your homework regularly and get help immediately when you have questions.

Quizzes, assignments, and worksheet rubics will be given throughout the semester.  Should a student miss class, it is the student’s responsibility to get a copy of the assignment from the instructor and turn it in on time. Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the assigned due date. Quizzes may be made up on a case-by-case basis. Students missing a quiz must contact their instructor within 24 hours of the missed quiz to remain eligible for make-up; otherwise, a grade of zero will be earned.

As a part of the course, students will complete 16 hours of experiential training in a long-term care facility.  Students are expected to remain professional, courteous, and arrive on time.  Any action deemed inappropriate by the course instructor is cause for dismissal from the site for the day or permanently.

Exams and Final Project: There will be (2) comprehensive course exams.  The comprehensive final

exam may not be made up—any student missing the final exam will earn zero (0) credit and cannot set for the State Board Exam.

Course Attendance

ASU Mid-South students are expected to attend classes regularly, to arrive on time, and to remain through the scheduled class time. Regular and prompt classroom attendance is a critical component of the educational experience because it prepares students to be effective and responsible citizens and employees. Students are expected to contact their instructors regarding any absence before class, or within 24 hours in case of an emergency, just as they would contact an employer regarding any absence from their jobs. With proper notification, the student may be given the opportunity to make up missed work by the next class period. Students are responsible for any material covered in class during their absence. Regardless of the reason or excuse, excessive absences, tardiness, or early departures from class will negatively affect you.  Tardies and early departures may be counted toward the hours of absences a student has in a class.

Course Tardy Policy: Students arriving to class more than 5 minutes late will be considered tardy. Three tardies will constitute one absence. Three absences (10.5 hrs) render students ineligible to continue in the course as specified by the guidelines of the Arkansas Office of Long-Term Care.  Students find it very difficult to make up this time and much critical course information is missed.  Exceptions are considered on a case-by-case basis.  Students arriving more than 45 minutes late to class will be considered absent. Early departures from class, without justification deemed appropriate by the instructor, will be considered a tardy or an absence on a case-by-case basis.

State of Arkansas Regulatory Compliance  ***********

The State of Arkansas Office of Long Term Care has set a required minimum number of hours for a Nursing Assistant Program.  All program participants must attend a minimum of 84 classroom hours and 16 clinical externship hours (100 hours total) to earn eligibility to sit for the State of Arkansas Nursing Assistant Certification Exam.  Students are permitted to make-up by arrangement with their instructor, up to 10.5 hours (only) of missed classroom time. Clinical hours cannot be made up, exception: instructor approval and space availability.  Arrangements must be made within 24 hours of the occurrence.  Any student failing to meet the State of Arkansas training requirements for the Certified Nursing Assistant course shall not pass the course or be eligible to sit for the Certification Exam. ************

Inclement Weather Policy

If severe weather forces cancellation of classes at the beginning of the day, an announcement will be posted on the ASU Mid-South website, on Campus Announcements in Canvas, and made on Channel 5 (WMC-TV Memphis) and FM100 Radio between 6:00 and 7:00am. In addition announcements will be sent via email and/or text messages to all students. Should bad weather occur during the day forcing the cancellation of evening classes, an announcement will be made before 5:00 PM.

**NOTE:  THE ARKANSAS STATE OFFICE OF LONG TERM CARE DOES NOT ALLOW FOR MISSED TIME (ALL HOURS MUST BE ACCOUNTED FOR TO EQUAL 100 HOURS TOTAL)**  All hours are documented in the student file per guideline regulation.

 Academic Honesty

Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited.  Plagiarism can be defined as unintentionally or deliberately using another person’s writing or ideas as though they are one’s own.  Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, copying another individual’s work and taking credit for it, paraphrasing information from a source without proper documentation, mixing one’s own words with those of another author without attribution, and buying or downloading a paper from the Internet.

When an infraction occurs, the course instructor has the authority to assign a grade of “0” for the assignment, test, or examination, or to assign a grade of “F” for the course. The Vice President for Learning & Instruction shall keep a record of the incident. Students receiving a grade of “0” as a result of academic dishonesty may not drop the course or withdraw from the college to avoid the penalty. See the ASU Mid-South Catalog for more detail.

To Avoid Plagiarism, Do Not Make the Following Errors:

  • Copying text verbatim (“word for word”)
  • Stealing or buying a paper from another student or from the Internet.

  • Cutting and pasting words, phrases, or whole passages from the Internet into your document.
  • Directly quoting the words of another without proper attribution

    • Proper citation: Investigations involving DNA analysis have resulted in the release of
      innocent prisoners (Doe 42).
  • Neglecting to turn in a works cited page or turning a works cited page with fake or incorrect sources.
  • Problems with Unintentional Plagiarism: While intentional plagiarism involves turning in a paper that is not your own
  • work, copying verbatim from a text, or mixing your words with the author’s words, unintentional plagiarism can result
  • a lack of understanding of how to work with outside sources and may require more independent study and exercises in paraphrasing, quoting, and using APA or MLA format. Consult with your instructor or with an LSC tutor for more information.
